Pre-ownership

Pre OwnershipWe find that nowadays, people tend to put a lot of thoughts into deciding which car or wallpaper to buy but not always that much when it comes to dogs. One of the main reasons to this is probably the lack of information. All dogs trainers have come across many owners with dogs separated too early from their mum or bought from puppy farms and showing strong behaviour problems. Animal shelters are full of dogs bought on impulse. The owners are often genuinely sorry and wish they had known better.

Choosing the right breed for you or the right type of dog is an individual issue but we would be happy to offer guidance with an individual pre-ownership session.

Depending on your individual situation, the session can cover:

  • Guidance to decide the right type of dog to suit your lifestyle and personality:
Which dog, where to start, what to look for, hereditary diseases, what age to buy...
  • Advice on what to do before getting your dog:
Puppy proofing your house, creating a safe environment, what equipment to purchase...
  • Training and socialisation recommendations:
How to behave on the first few days, how to introduce new stimuli and experiences, common mistakes to avoid in dog training, how to prevent the usual puppy problems such as chewing and speed up toilet training...

Please note that we do not endorse specific breeders or rescue association where to get your dog or puppy from. We believe this should be your individual decision. But the pre-ownership session is the opportunity to discuss your situation with an independant specialist, to help you define the different criteria to consider when making your decision and to teach you what to look at when contacting or visiting a breeder.
